Istana Negara means National Palace. Istana Negara is the official residence of Their Majesties the King and His Majesty, the Queen. Istana Negara Jalan Duta was officially opened on 15 November, 2011 during the reign of His Majesty the King XIII, Al-Wathiqu Billah Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin. The new Istana Negara covering 97.65 hectares was built to replace the old National Palace located on Istana Road about 8 kilometer from a new Palace. The old National Place has been used for almost 54 years since Malaysia got independent in 1957. The new palace construction took 4 years to complete with an estimated construction cost of about RM650 million. However, the construction of the new palace only use 65 hectares to the palace while the rest is used for the park and buffer area for safety.
The Palace complex consists of several components such as Palace workers’ quarters, home security team, stables, underground parking, banquet halls, areas for sports and pool. The main entrance gate also houses of the Palace Guard from the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment and vedette that attract tourists from within and outside the country.
